AFC Notes: Browns, Colts, Ravens

Browns

Browns DC Gregg Williams explained the team’s thinking when it came to taking CB Denzel Ward over pass rusher Bradley Chubb in this year’s draft.

I would have loved to have Chubb, but at this point in time, I do not think that he covers the deep ball well enough as a press corner,’’ Williams said jokingly, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “Nor does he intercept the ball well enough. I have an (Emmanuel) Ogbah, and I have got a lot of other guys out there. But I think (Chubb) is a really good player, I really do. Knew an awful lot about him, too because the guy that was getting him prepared for the draft and all of that stuff was a D-line coach that I had many years ago that is retired now and going around doing that kind of stuff. I had a great report on him. Everything passed with flying colors on him.

“Denzel fits in with what we need to do, how we need to improve here and how we need to improve as a team here. It will all come out in the wash once you play the games and start to win games. We need to win games.”

Colts

The Indianapolis Colts announced a number of changes to their football operations staff including:

  • Ed Dodds – assistant general manager
  • Brian Decker – director of player development
  • Jon Shaw – assistant director of pro scouting
  • Anthony Coughlan – college scouting coordinator
  • Mike Lacy – player personnel scout
  • Zerick Rollins – scouting assistant
  • George Li – senior football strategy analyst/game management position
  • Parks Frazier – assistant to the head coach
  • Matt DeWall – assistant video director

Ravens

Ravens OLB Terrell Suggs says he isn’t thinking about his contract situation and plans to cross that bridge at a later time.

“I’ve always crossed that bridge when it happened,” Suggs said, via the Baltimore Sun. “I’ve never been one to jump into that topic before it was time. So I’m not going to worry about it now. There’s something more important that’s at stake right now.”

Suggs is in line to be an unrestricted free agent in 2019.
