This move comes after concerns regarding FS Dwight Lowery who suffered a concussion recently and could be in danger of missing the season.
Johnson, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Vikings back in 2008. He spent four years with Minnesota before departing as a free agent.
Johnson last played for the Lions in 2012, but he sat out the 2013 season after he was unable to make the team. Johnson was later arrested and charged with urinating in public and resisting arrest.
