Giants Still Planning To Play Rookie QB Kyle Lauletta, But Not Until They’re Eliminated

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY reports that the Giants still plan to play rookie QB Kyle Lauletta at some point this season, but not while they’re still in the mix for a playoff spot.

The odds are slim of the Giants winning the NFC East and Vacchiano says that the front office hasn’t lost sight of the big picture. A source with knowledge of their plans tells Vacchiano that New York needs to see Lauletta on the field before they head into a crucial offseason.

Vacchiano adds that the Giants would still like to see backup Alex Tanney play a few series as well.

One possibility the team has discussed, according to Vacchiano, is getting Lauletta or Tanney into the game for the second half when one team has a comfortable lead, but that hasn’t been easy up to this point.

New York could be positioned to get one of the top quarterback prospects in next year’s draft such as Oregon’ Justin Herbert, depending on how things play out over the final four games of the season.

On Monday, Giants HC Pat Shurmur announced that Eli Manning will start their Week 14 game against the Eagles.

Lauletta, 23, was selected in the fourth round of this year’s draft by the Giants. He signed a four-year, $3,167,700 with the Giants and stands to make a base salary of $485,000 for the 2018 season.

During his four-year college career at Richmond, Lauletta threw for 10,465 yards while completing 63.5 percent of his passes to go along with 73 touchdowns and 35 interceptions over the course of 40 games.
