NFL Notes: 49ers, Bengals, Dolphins, Eagles & Titans

49ers

49ers  HC Chip Kelly told reporters Tuesday that he does not have a timetable for deciding who will be the team’s starting quarterback between Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert.

I don’t have a timetable,” Kelly said, via CSN Bay Area. “You can’t put a timetable on it. It has to express itself and let it happen organically. That’s the only way it can happen. I’ve been involved in every level of quarterback battles. Just like battles at every other position, it’s going to be won on the field. It can’t be won because we have a timetable that has to be set by May 17th or May 18th.

According to Kelly, Kaepernick has done a great job in meetings, so he’s not concerned about him falling behind while he’s unable to participate in offseason practice.

“He’s great in the classroom,” Kelly said of Kaepernick. “He’s got a great grasp of what we’re doing. I’m really impressed by both Blaine and him and their intelligence and being able to pick up what we’re trying to do. So there’s no ‘fall behind’ because there’s no behind. There’s not a race. The first day we’re able to against defenses is today. We’re not naming the starting lineup for the Rams game today.

Bengals

  • Bengals signed fifth-round G Christian Westerman to a four-year deal.

Dolphins

  • Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald mentions that the Dolphins have a lot of defensive ends on their roster following the addition of Jason Jones.
  • Salguero wonders if they may have too many defensive ends for them to keep Dion Jordan.
  • According to Salguero, Jordan would be wise to be ready to play outside linebacker if he is reinstated from his suspension.

Eagles

Eagles QB Sam Bradford told reporters that his decision to briefly hold out was out of frustration and take some time to figure things out.

“I just felt like I needed some time,” Bradford said. “I could have stayed here, could have continued to work here, but I’m not sure my head really would have been here those two weeks.

Bradford added that the Eagles made him no promises to him regarding his role with the team.

“There’s no promises in this business,” Bradford said. “It wasn’t a long-term deal. It was a two-year deal. I was well aware of that. … My goal was to play well for the next two years and create that stability that I talked about for pretty much my whole career. Philadelphia is the place I wanted to be. I wanted to play well for the next two years, create that stability, and then sign a longer-term deal and stay here for the rest of my career.”

Titans

  • Titans undrafted CB Morgan Burns has decided to retire from football to pursue a career in the ministry. (Terry McCormick)
  • Titans placed Burns on the reserve/retired list. (Jim Wyatt)
