NFL Notes: Dave Gettleman, Bears, Packers

Dave Gettleman

  • Eric Edholm points out that now former Panthers GM Dave Gettleman has obvious ties to the Giants, given that he spent 13 years with the franchise before joining Carolina in 2013.
  • While it’s possible he could return to New York, Edholm says the Jaguars are also worth keeping an eye on for Gettleman, as executive VP Tom Coughlin has said very nice things about him in the past.

Bears

  • Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun Times writes that the Bears appear to have moved on from veteran TE Zach Miller after signing Dion Sims in free agency and drafting Adam Shaheen in the second round.
  • According to Potash, “Miller probably needs to have a really good camp to stick.

Packers

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky writes that Packers QB Aaron Rodgers should be back atop the quarterback pay scale at some point in the near future.

Rodgers mentioned in an interview with WTMJ TV last week that he’s aware of his value is hoping for his next contract with Green Bay to be a “no-brainer.”

“I know what my value is and the team compensated me really, really well a few years ago,” Rodgers said. “I hope the situation in a couple of years is a no-brainer. That means I’m playing well and the team’s still moving in the right direction and that’s what I can control. The other stuff, I let my agent handle that. We haven’t even had any conversations, so it’s not something I’m even thinking about. Like I said, I’ve got three years left on my deal.”

Rodgers is currently No. 6 on the quarterback pay scale and has outperformed those ahead of him based on his play and production in recent years. Even so, Rodgers isn’t overly concerned about setting the market value.

When it comes to setting the market values, I let that stuff take care of itself,” Rodgers said. “I know my value in this league, and I know the team appreciates me. I’m going to continue to make myself an indispensable part of this roster. When you do that, when your time comes up to get a contract, you usually get a contract extension.”
