NFL Notes: Dez Bryant, Jason Pierre-Paul, & Jaguars

Dez Bryant

Rand Getlin of NFL Media reports that there is still a big gap between the Cowboys and WR Dez Bryant regarding a long-term contract extension.

Getlin mentions that although Bryant would lose a significant amount of money by holding out of regular season games, in the end this would come down to the net outcome of what he would make from the games he plays this year and a new contract.

According to Getlin, Bryant would stand to make roughly $5 million, even after sitting out 10 regular season games.
There’s no question that the Cowboys’ offense would look a lot different without Bryant, and if they were to struggle in his absence, it could give Bryant and his reps some addition leverage in contract negotiations.

Jason Pierre-Paul

  • According to Dan Graziano, the most likely outcome for the Giants and franchise DE Jason Pierre-Paul, who recently had his finger amputated, is that the two parties will negotiate a lower franchise figure in return for a written promise from the team to pay him the entire amount.
  • Graziano mentions that the Giants could theoretically get Pierre-Paul to report to training camp and help him with his rehab.
  • By accepting a lower tender than the $14.813 million figure he would make, JPP would be accepting that he’s now a somewhat diminished player and may not be able to play the entire season.

Jaguars

Jaguars executive Chris Polian recently discussed his interview with the Philadelphia Eagles for their vacant general manager post several months ago with Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union.

It kind of came out of the blue. I wasn’t expecting it,” Polian said. “It was quick getting the information and then getting up there. But I enjoyed it very much, the chance to sit down, talk and present my ideas to Chip.”

According to Polian, the initial interview included Eagles HC Chip Kelly as well as other members of the Eagles’ front office.

We were able to talk and get a little bit of his philosophy and how he wanted to set the organization up and what he was looking for,” Polian said. “To just talk about ideas of how you move an organization forward was pretty cool.

Ultimately, the Eagles elected to hire Ed Marynowitz as their general manager.

“In the end, they made a decision that was best for them and Ed is a really good person and Chip had a working relationship with him on a daily basis and that always matters,” Polian said.
