Jamison Hensley of ESPN writes that Ravens veteran WR Jeremy Maclin is a “top candidate to get cut” this offseason, given his limited production and Baltimore’s cap situation.
Hensley says that if Maclin is released, it would happen before he’s due a $1 million roster bonus on March 16.
If Maclin was open to accepting a pay cut from the $4 million he’s owed next season, it’s possible he could return to the Ravens. However, it clearly didn’t go as expected for him and the Ravens in 2017.
Maclin, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Eagles back in 2009. He spent five years with the Eagles before signing a five-year, $55 million contract that included $22.5 million guaranteed with the Chiefs in 2015.
Maclin was set to make a base salary of $9.75 million for the 2017 season when the Chiefs released him last year. The Ravens eventually signed him to a two-year, $11 million contract.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Maclin would free up $5 million of available cap space while creating $2.5 million in dead money.
In 2017, Maclin appeared in 12 games for the Ravens and caught 40 passes for 440 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 52 receiver out of 118 qualifying players.
