Report: Buccaneers Will Attempt To Trade S Dashon Goldson

Rick Stroud of the Tamba Bay Times reports that the Buccaneers will attempt to trade S Dashon Goldson following the addition of Chris Conte.

  • According to Stroud, Goldson’s 2015 salary of $8 million could be tough to move for the Bucs.
  • Stroud doesn’t Goldson being back with the Buccaneers, even if they can’t find a trade partner.

Yesterday, Stroud reported that the Buccaneers were preparing to release Goldson once they had a deal in place with Conte, but it appears as though they plan to try to find a trade before considering their next move.

Tampa Bay has clearly been trying to turn the page on Goldson for some time now given that previous reports had said that they made him available for trade at the deadline last year.

The problem for the Buccaneers could be finding a team willing to part with draft picks for a player, who could end up being released in the coming days. The Texans dealt with the same issue in regards to Andre Johnson, who was eventually released.

Goldson, 30, signed a five-year, $41.25 million contract that included $22 million guaranteed with the Bucs back in March of 2013. He has base salaries of $7.5 million (2015), $7.5 million (2016), and $6.75 million (2017) coming his way over the remainder of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Goldson will free up $4 million in available cap space while creating $4 million in dead money.

However, the best move for the Buccaneers would be to trade him, seeing as they could free up $8 million and take on no dead money.

In 2014, Goldson appeared in 14 games and recorded 81 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass defense for the Buccaneers. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 86 safety out of 87 qualifying players.
