Brian Hoyer Has A “Strong Market” With Jets, Texans & Vikings Being Options

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that free agent QB Brian Hoyer has a “strong market” right now with the Jets and Texans among the interested teams.

The Jets will obviously need to add another quarterback given that Michael Vick is a free agent and they can’t head into the 2015 season with Geno Smith firmly entrenched as the team’s starter.

Houston has some obvious ties to Hoyer given that Texans HC Bill O’Brien worked with him while in New England a few years ago. However, the Texans could still elect to re-sign Ryan Mallett to pair with Ryan Fitzpatrick.

According to Pro Football Talk, Browns free agent QB Brian Hoyer could be a candidate to replace Matt Cassel in Minnesota now that the Vikings have traded him to the Bills for two draft picks.

  • PFT points out that Hoyer played for Vikings OC Norv Turner a few years ago while in Cleveland.

Ian Rapoport adds that the Vikings will likely target a veteran backup in free agency to play behind Teddy Bridgewater next year.

Cleveland has already signed Josh McCown to a three-year contract, so it’s pretty clear that Hoyer will be moving on this offseason.

There hasn’t been all that much buzz regarding Hoyer in recent weeks, but some speculative options that have been mentioned include the Buccaneers, Texans and Jets.

Hoyer, 29, played out his two-year, $1.965 million contract that includes $250,000 guaranteed and is one of the better available players in a limited free agent class of quarterbacks.

Over the course of 14 games, Hoyer has thrown for 3,334 yards while completing 55.4 percent of his passes to go along with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 35 quarterback out of 39 players.
