The San Francisco 49ers announced that they have activated NT Ian Williams from the active/PUP list, making him eligible to participate immediately.
Williams, a fourth-year player out of Notre Dame, emerged as one of the biggest stories of 49ers’ camp in 2013, beating out NT Glenn Dorsey for the starting job.
Unfortunately, Williams went down in week 2 with a season ending ankle injury.
Williams has only appeared in six games in his career, but he clearly showed the organization enough ability for them to anoint him the starting nose tackle.
Dorsey recently tore his bicep, and will miss the entire 2014 season, thrusting Williams right back into contention for a starting job. ย It will not be handed to him however, as NT Quinton Dial has emerged as the newest talent anchoring the San Francisco defensive line.
Regardless of who starts, Williams’ return is welcome news for the 49ers.
