49ers Expected To Franchise K Robbie Gould If They Can’t Get Long-Term Deal Done

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Bay Area, the 49ers are expected to franchise K Robbie Gould if they’re unable to reach an agreement on a long-term extension before the March 5 deadline.

The franchise tag would cost the 49ers around $5 million fully guaranteed for the 2019 season.

Gould said recently that he plans to “consider all opportunities” in free agency this offseason.

“Cody is obviously the kicker for the Chicago Bears,” Gould said on 670 The Score. “They have a lot things they would have to do in order for it to work. Those are all things, you never know what’s going to happen, right? We’re all ears if we get to that March 11 time and we’ll take it in stride. We’d definitely consider all opportunities when we get to that free agent part, for sure.”

Gould, 36, originally signed on with the Patriots back in 2005 as an undrafted free agent, but he lasted just a few months in New England before joining the Ravens briefly and later joining the Bears.

Gould was in the fourth year of his five-year, $17.925 million contract when he was released by the Bears at the start of the 2016 season. He later signed a one-year deal with the Giants.

The 49ers brought Gould in on a two-year, $4 million contract in 2017. He’s in line to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

In 2018, Gould appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers and converted 33 of 34 field goal attempts (97.1 percent) to go along with 27 of 29 extra point tries (93.1 percent).
