Per Matt Barrows, 49ers CB K’Waun Williams‘ agent says the team has picked up his client’s option for the 2020 season.
Williams was one of the better nickel corners in the league last season, so this keeps a key part of San Francisco’s defense in place.
Williams, 28, wound up signing on with the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh back in 2014. He was in the final year of his three-year, $1.53 million contract when the Browns cut him loose during the preseason as they trimmed their roster down to 75 players.
Williams was later claimed off of waivers by the Bears, but he failed a physical due to his ankle injury and was cut loose a day later. The 49ers signed him to a one-year, $765,000 contract in February, 2017, before later signing him to a three-year extension at the start of the regular season.
In 2019, Williams appeared in 15 games for the 49ers and recorded 51 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, four forced fumbles and two pass defenses for the 49ers. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 7 cornerback out of 113 qualifying players.
