According to Mike Garafolo, the 49ers are releasing LB Malcolm Smith.
San Francisco also signed WR Nick Williams, per Garafolo. Williams was recently released by the Broncos.
Smith restructured his contract earlier this offseason, but became expendable with the 49ers depth at linebacker that developed this summer.
This move gives him a head start to sign with another team before the rest of roster cuts.
Smith, 29, is a former seventh-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2011. He played out his rookie contract with the Seahawks and was named Super Bowl MVP a few years ago before signing a two-year deal with the Raiders in 2015.
The 49ers signed Smith to a five-year, $26.5 million contract that included $13 million guaranteed last year. He stands to make a base salary of $3,750,000 for the 2019 season.
In 2018, Smith appeared in 12 games for the 49ers and recorded 35 tackles, no sacks and a pass defense.
