Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the 49ers have signed QB Josh Johnson to a two-year deal.
Johnson had been rumored to be on the 49ers radar for a number of weeks now despite the fact that they were still trying to re-sign Alex Smith. The Redskins were also reported to have interest in Johnson but it appeared that the 49ers were the favorites.
Jim Harbaugh coached Johnson while they were together at the University of San Diego so there’s definitely a connection there.
Earlier, we posted that San Francisco can get out of Smith’s new contract by releasing him before the start of the 2013 season. The 49ers have already hinted that they would like to keep the job open for Colin Kaepernick so Smith can hardly feel comfortable about his long-term future with the team.
