According to Howard Balzer, the San Francisco 49ers brought in six free agents for workouts on Tuesday including RBs Charcandrick West and Shane Vereen.
The full list of tryouts for the 49ers includes:
- RB Matthew Dayes
- RB Andre Ellington
- RB Jeremy McNichols
- RB Shane Vereen
- RB Charcandrick West
- QB Jack Heneghan
Of this group, the 49ers elected to sign Dayes to their practice squad.
West, 27, originally signed on with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Abilene Christian back in 2014. He returned to the Chiefs on an exclusive rights contract in 2016 before agreeing to a three-year, $4.2 million contract.
West was set to make a base salary of $1.45 million for the 2018 season when the Chiefs released him. The Jets signed him to a contract in August but waived him as they trimmed their roster down to the 53-man limit.
In 2017, West appeared in 13 games for the Chiefs and rushed for 72 yards on 18 carries (4 YPC) to go along with 27 receptions for 150 yards receiving and four total touchdowns.
Vereen, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2011. He played out his rookie contract with the Pats before signing a three-year, $12.35 million with the Giants back in March of 2015.
Vereen took a pay cut to be back with the Giants last year and finished out his contract with the team.
The Saints signed him to a contract back in July only to place him on injured reserve last month before releasing him with a settlement.
In 2017, Vereen appeared in all 16 games for the Giants and rushed for 164 yards on 45 carries (3.6 YPC) to go along with 44 receptions for 23 yards receiving and no touchdowns. He also contributed 196 kick return yards.
