The San Francisco 49ers announced that they’ve placed preseason standout RBย Jarryd Hayne on waivers Saturday and promoted RBย Kendall Gaskins to their practice squad.
This comes as a bit of a surprise, especially with Carlos Hyde out for Week 8’s game, due to a foot injury.
It will be interesting to see if Hayne clears waivers, which would allow the 49ers to sign him to their practice squad.
Hayne, 27, signed a three-year contractย that includedย $115,100 guaranteed with the 49ers back in March. He stands to make a base salary of $435,000 for the 2015 season.
This season, he’s appeared in six games and ran for 25 yards on eight carries (3.1 YPC) to go along with one reception for seven yards receiving. He has also contributed 76 kick return yards.
Gaskins, 24, originally signed withย the Bills as an undrafted free agent out of Richmond back in 2013. He had brief stints with the Titans and Giants before signing toย the 49ers’ practice squad inย September of last year.
He later signed a reserve/future contract with San Francisco before beingย released at the start of the season. The 49ers laterย signed him to the practice squad the following day.
