49ers Expected To Make A Decision Regarding QB Alex Smith Soon

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the 49ers will attempt to trade QB Alex Smith in the coming weeks, but are prepared to release him “out of respect” if they’re unable to find a deal for the former No. 1 overall pick.

49ers reportedly have a “strong relationship” with Smith, but both Smith and his agent, Tom Condon, believe he has earned the right to seek his own opportunity.

Rapoport lists the Bills, Cardinals, Chiefs and potentially the Eagles as options for Smith and adds that Jets are not in play for Smith.

Keith Britton reports that sources have informed him that Smith would like to play for the Browns next year.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tossed out a hypothetical trade that involved the Jets sending CB Darrelle Revis to San Francisco in return for Smith and second-round pick.

It’s hard to put a lot of stock in the idea at this point in time, but we should have a better idea of his options in the next few weeks.
