Free agentย DTย Brandon Williams mention a recent interview withย Sirius XM NFL Radio that while he would like to return to Baltimore, his future with the Ravens is “up in the air.”
“If it so happens I feel like Baltimore is the best place for me, then I’ll stay and we’ll work it out from there,” Williams said, viaย ESPN.com. “If not, and I feel it’s right somewhere else and that’s where I need to be, that’s where I’ll be. But right now, it’s up in the air.”
Williams did, however, make it clear that he’s looking to be paid fair market value so he can take care of his family long-term.
“It comes down to me taking care of my family for the long haul. Baltimore knows that,” Williams said. “I’ve talked to [coach John] Harbaugh and Ozzie [Newsome, general manager] and they know the biggest thing is … taking care of my family.”
Ravens assistant GM Eric DeCosta told reporters a few weeks ago that Williams is someone they must try to re-sign in the coming months.
โWe have to try to retain him,โ DeCosta said, viaย BaltimoreRavens.com. โHeโs an โAโ player for us, heโs one of our best defensive players. Heโs a rock inside. This guy can stuff the run, he can rush the quarterback, he can do everything we want him to do.โ
It’s going to be very costly for the Ravens to re-sign Williams, as there should be no shortage of suitors for him during free agency.
Williams, 27, is a former third-round pick of the Ravens back in 2013. He played out his four-year, $2,675,000 rookie contract and is now in line to be one of the most sought after defensive tackles in this year’s free agent class.
In 2016, Williams appeared in all 16 games for the Ravens and recorded 51 tackles, one sack, and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 39 defensive tackle out of 127 qualifying players.
