AFC East Notes: Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots

Bills

  • Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti believes the Bills could try and get ahead of the market with a new deal for CB TreDavious White despite still having two more years of team control.
  • Though the Bills aren’t strapped for cap space, Ginnitti identifies TE Tyler Kroft as a potential cut candidate for $5 million in savings.

Dolphins

  • According to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, both Dolphins WRs DeVante Parker and Albert Wilson remain in the concussion protocol, though they each participated in practice in non-contact jerseys.
  • Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti says Parker is an obvious extension candidate given his breakout this year, while Miami could save $9.5 million with $1.3 million in dead money by cutting Wilson, who hasn’t been able to stay healthy.
  • Dolphins fourth-round rookie G Michael Deiter said the coaches told him he “needs to play better” when they benched him last week. (Barry Jackson)
  • Dolphins HC Brian Flores didn’t rule out Miami bringing back CB Aqib Talib in 2020. Talib is in the last year of his deal and was traded to Miami by the Rams after being placed on injured reserve in a salary dump. (Beasley)

Jets

Jets RB Le’Veon Bell has been frustrated with his usage at times in New York’s offense. Bell has only one game with more than 20 carries and his 67 targets in 12 games puts him on pace for the lowest rate of targets since 2015. There have been a number of other factors that have limited Bell and the Jets offense this season, but entering the final three games the running back still doesn’t feel like he’s been given the chance to show what he can really do.

“Honestly, no,” Bell said via NJ.com’s Matt Stypulkoski. “I think that’s being in a new system, new guys up front, it’s a new coaching staff, I’m with a new organization. So everything takes time, I understand that. That’s why I’ve always been patient. But to be honest with you, no. I feel like when I do, I’ll be back to what people are used to seeing.”

  • According to the Athletic’s Connor Hughes, a team source said he would have a hard time seeing the Jets getting more than a conditional sixth-round pick for Bell because of his salary.
  • If New York were willing to pay Bell’s $8.5 million base salary in 2020, they could get as much as a fourth-round pick in a trade per another source.
  • Jets G Alex Lewis, acquired in a trade from the Ravens, is the only current starter guaranteed to return in that same role next year for New York. (Hughes)
  • The Jets listed S Jamal Adams as doubtful for Thursday night’s game against the Ravens. (Mike Garafolo)
  • Adams is eligible for an extension for the first time this offseason and his price will likely top Redskins S Landon Collins‘ $14 million per season. (Michael Ginnitti)
  • The Jets will also likely eat $12 million in dead cap to save $3 million and get CB Trumaine Johnson off the roster.

Patriots

  • Per NESN’s Doug Kyed, Patriots HC Bill Belichick said the advance scout the video crew was supposedly in the press box to film for the Browns and Bengals game was “doing his job” and not doing anything untoward: “The football team, the football staff, and the coaching staff had nothing to do with what happened. Nothing.”
  • The Athletic’s Jeff Howe writes that the producer who was shooting the video for Kraft Productions didn’t realize it was against NFL rules to film the opponent’s sideline, as his crew usually had privileged bench access in New England.
  • Howe adds the producer decided to film the Bengals sideline for B-roll because watching it from the press box was part of the job for the advance scout they were profiling.
  • NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said of the investigation: “It’s under review. We’re going to be thorough and take our time.” (Ian Rapoport)
  • Goodell said of the prior rules violations for New England: “That’s a factor. But most important is this incident. (Ian Rapoport)
  • Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti thinks New England could try to extend 29-year-old LB Jamie Collins given his career renaissance in his return to the Patriots.
  • Patriots WR Julian Edelman missed practice Wednesday for “load management.” (Howe)
