AFC Notes: Bills, Jets, Patriots

Bills

Bills HC Sean McDermott says he’s “very confident” in Matt Barkley serving as the backup to Josh Allen.

“Very confident; I’m very confident in Matt for a lot of reasons,” McDermott said, via Sal Maiorana of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.

The Bills drafted Jake Fromm this year and have Davis Webb on their roster to serve as competition for the backup job.

“Competition is good to have,” McDermott said. “A competition at that position and competition across our roster. And I think Brandon [Beane, the Bills General Manager] and his staff have done a good job of providing that. So, we’ll just see how it plays out.”

Jets

Connor Hughes of The Athletic takes a look at five younger players on the Jets’ roster who could secure a spot on the team’s 53-man roster.

  1. UDFA EDGE Bryce Huff
  2. UDFA WR George Campbell
  3. Third-year RB Josh Adams
  4. TE Ross Travis
  5. OT Conor McDermott

Patriots

  • Phil Perry of NBC Sports writes that with an upcoming cap crunch, it remains to be seen what the Patriots will do with franchise LG Joe Thuney during the upcoming season. The team could either keep him on the franchise tag through 2020, trade him, or sign him to an extension.
  • Despite the financial outlook for 2021, Perry writes that Thuney can expect to be paid like one of the top guards in the NFL.
