AFC Notes: Chiefs, Jets, Titans

Chiefs

New Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins said that HC Andy Reid has already helped him become more of a complete receiver in the few months he’s been in Kansas City.

“He’s helped me in this short amount of time with being a complete receiver, not just being (a receiver who) runs go-routes,” Watkins said, per Adam Teicher. “I’ve got to learn the whole route tree. The standard (Reid wants), he called me out in meetings. That’s what you need as a player. I take full advantage of all of those things. I’ve never been in an offense like this, around a coach that feels like he’s obsessed with the game and he makes you want to be obsessed with it, too, to know more about the offense.”

Watkins added that he’s been playing all of the various receiver positions this offseason.

“This offense is the broadest offense I’ve ever been in,” Watkins said. “I just feel like you get more opportunities on linebackers, safeties. It’s definitely easier working against a linebacker or getting open on safeties.”

Jets

  • Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com believes that there’s a “very good chance” first-round QB Sam Darnold wins the starting job this summer and opens the season against the Lions.
  • Breer believes playing Darnold right away is the right move for the Jets if he earns the job.

Titans

Titans second-round OLB Harold Landry says he’s hoping to make an immediate impact this year.

“I definitely want to make the vets here proud, and make the front office and coach Vrabel and all the coaches out here proud for selecting me in the draft,” Landry said, via TitansOnline.com. “So every day I definitely come out here and bust my ass because I want to definitely make an impact as a rookie and be able to help this team win a Super Bowl.”

Veteran Derrick Morgan mentioned that rookie clearly has “a lot of natural ability” and it can’t hurt to have more pass rushers as the season goes on.

“He has a lot of natural ability,” Morgan said of Landry. “And just like anybody that comes in, you just have to help them evolve their game and polish it up a bit to be ready to go. As a rookie, you have to be able to adapt, and be willing to learn, and he does that, so we definitely appreciate that.

“Look around, I remember Seattle had a plethora of rushers, where they had guys moving all around the defense. So the more the merrier. We want to give problems on each side.
