AFC Notes: Trevor Lawrence, Texans, Titans

Jaguars

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence said his goal this offseason is to understand the offensive system inside and out.

“I want to just master the offense,” Lawrence said, via Jaguars.com. “I want to have complete control, know everything and be comfortable. You can’t really play free and play really well if you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s the goal, to master the offense by the time training camp comes around so in training camp we can focus everything forward on being the best team we can come August 14 and then going on into the regular season as well.

“That’s the plan. It starts with the quarterback. Obviously, I have to be ready and I’m going to do everything I can to ensure that’s the case. I’m excited to get started.”

Jaguars HC Urban Meyer said Lawrence is still adjusting to NFL speed and the practices have been up-and-down.

“We did have a couple of bad practices where the balls were trying to pound them in there,” Meyer said. “It’s a much faster game. It’s the best of the best on that side of the ball. That’s something we’re coaching him through, but it is a concern.

“It’s our job to get him those situations as much as possible. We have not been able to do that much. You’re not allowed [in the offseason] to be in those situations where the defense is breaking on the ball hard. They’re laid off right now. That will be something that will be instrumental in training camp once we start.”

  • Jaguars’ pass game coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said they haven’t named their starting quarterback between Lawrence and Gardner Minshew: “It’s still too early to say how this thing’s going to play out.” (Michael DiRocco)

Texans

Texans GM Nick Caserio said during an appearance on Sports Radio 610 that they could make a decision regarding Deshaun Watson by training camp.

I don’t have any additional comments about anything,” Caserio said, via John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. “I think we’re respectful of what’s happening, respectful of the process and everybody that’s involved. The most important thing is for all of us, the coaches and players and myself included, is to focus on the things we can control. As we get more information, as we get closer to training camp, we’ll try to make the best decision for the Houston Texans, whatever that entails.”

  • Caserio also didn’t commit to S Justin Reid as a long-term piece with Houston, which makes sense to the Athletic’s Aaron Reiss. He says Reid will look to increase his value in a contract year and the Texans want him to prove he fits their scheme.

Titans

  • French is converting to football after declaring for the 2020 NBA Draft out of St. Louis University but going undrafted.
