AFC South Notes: Colts, Jaguars, Texans, Titans

Colts

Jaguars

While this coming week technically marks the first week that Jaguars QB Nick Foles is eligible to play after coming off of injured reserve, the team has already said it will wait until after the Week 10 bye to decide whether Foles or sixth-round rookie QB Gardner Minshew will start the rest of the season. Foles signed a big deal to join the Jaguars this offseason, but Minshew has been stellar in relief since Foles broke his collarbone in the season opener, throwing 13 touchdowns to just two interceptions.

With two more weeks until he needs to make a decision, Jaguars HC Doug Marrone says he’s going to wait until he has to before making one.

“Since we have the bye, there’s so many things that can happen between now and then,” Marrone said via Jacksonville.com’s Gene Frenette. “Whether injuries come into play with either quarterback or whatever may happen, so for me, I’m not going to waste my time. And that’s probably my strength and my weakness. My strength is I can focus on something, but my weakness might be down the road, if you don’t see this [quarterback] thing coming. To answer your question, I really haven’t thought about it. The reason why is because I don’t have to, and I don’t want to. I’ll deal with it when it happens. And that’s the truth.”

Texans

  • According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Texans DE J.J. Watt is looking at a recovery time of four months following surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. While he’s out the rest of 2019, he should be ready for OTAs in 2020.
  • The Houston Chronicle’s John McClain writes that teams looking to unload a defensive end are calling Houston trying to get their 2020 second-round pick, one of the few draft picks the Texans have left.
  • Texans HC Bill O’Brien said it was unlikely Houston would make any more moves ahead of Tuesday afternoon’s trade deadline: “I would say the chances of any transaction like that happening today are slim and none, but never say never.” (Aaron Wilson)
  • Despite the injury to Watt, O’Brien said he wasn’t interested in finding a short-term fix and just renting a player for eight games. (Wilson)
  • O’Brien added he was trying to balance the future of the team with the present: “It’s not just about 2019. It’s about 2020 and 2021.” (Wilson)
  • Texans LT Laremy Tunsil‘s shoulder injury is reportedly minor. (Rapoport)
  • Texans worked out DB Anthony Chesley and DT Eddie Vanerdoes. (Aaron Wilson)
