AFC South Notes: Colts, Jaguars, Texans, Titans

Colts

  • New Colts QB Philip Rivers appears to be fired up about joining his new team, telling NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah after he signed his one-year deal he hopes he’s in Indianapolis “much longer than that.”
  • Rivers had previously said he was looking at a two-year maximum and might even retire after one year if it didn’t go well.
  • NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo says the Colts and Jaguars were circling around a potential deal for QB Nick Foles involving a fifth-round pick before Jacksonville sent him to Chicago for their compensatory fourth-round pick.

Jaguars

  • Jaguars LB Joe Schobert‘s five-year, $53.75 million deal comes with a $12 million signing bonus and base salaries of $2.5 million, $7 million, $8.75 million, $10.25 million and $10.75 million. (Aaron Wilson)
  • Schobert’s base salaries in 2020 and 2021 are guaranteed. He also has up to $300,000 annually in per-game active roster bonuses, plus an annual $200,000 workout bonus.

Texans

  • ESPN’s Dianna Russini says former Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins told the team weeks ago he wanted a new contract worth $18-$20 million a year otherwise he wouldn’t report to the team.
  • ESPN’s Ed Werder says a team source told him the contract was the major impetus for trading Hopkins, with the receiver’s relationship with HC Bill O’Brien not an issue or factor.
  • The source added the offer Houston got from Arizona was the best one on the table “by far.”
  • Aaron Wilson reports that the Texans showed preliminary interest in Broncos free agent S Will Parks, but that ended when they reached three-year, $20.25 million deal with S Eric Murray.
