Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports that Alex Smith has begun to pull ahead in the teams current quarterback position.
“There’s some separation there,” said Harbaugh. “Alex has done a fine job. But Kaep is doing a phenomenal job. He is going to be one heck of a talent and one heck of a player.”
San Francisco’s offensive line exposed during the teams first preseason game but issues with the offensive line managed to highlight the teams quarterback issues as well. Since then Daunte Culpeppers name has come up as a backup option for the team but a deal is not imminent at this point in time.
As for the battle for the starting job, Smith is going to give them the bet shot at winning games this season. I can understand that 49ers have had enough of Smith by now but it’s hard to argue against the fact that he’s been put in a difficult situation each every year considering the number of offensive systems this guy has had to learn. Even Aaron Rodgers would have had a tough time in San Francisco had they choose him over Smith.
