Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Chicago Bears are having aย “serious case of buyer’s remorse” over the contract they signed QB Jay Cutler to last year.
- According to Rapoport, the Bears considered benching him duringย the game against the Buccaneers.
- Rapoport adds that there is doubt within the Bears’ organization that Cutler is the guy who could lead them to where they want to go.
ESPN’s Adam Schefterย previously reported that the Bears could tradeย Cutler next year and save over $12 million in the process.
According to Schefter, teams around the NFL have said that Cutler would have interest if he were to be available for trade.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talkย mentioned a fewย weeks ago thatย the Bears aren’tย “technically arenโt stuck” with Cutler’s contract for another season, so it’s clear that they do have some options to consider during the offseason.
Cutler, 31, hasn’t come close to living up to hisย seven-year, $126.7 million contractย that includedย $54 million guaranteed this season, which is why people are exploring ways for the Bears to rid themselves of this deal.
This season, Cutler has completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 3,446 yards to go along with 26ย touchdowns and 15ย interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 33ย quarterback out of 39 qualifying players.

I keep hearing the trade rumors but who would trade for Cutler? If he is a great quarterback, the Bears would keep him. Who is going to take over that big contract for a quarterback ranked 33 of 39? Some Bear fans even think they could get a high draft pick for Cutler. More likely the Bears would have to give a team a draft pick to assume Cutler’s contract.
