Adam Schefter reports that the Bills are releasing veteran RB LeSean McCoy on Saturday as they cut their roster down to 53 players.
- Pro Football Talk reports that McCoy’s release came “out of left field” with no request that he take a pay cut.
There had been questions about McCoy’s status with the Bills after they brought in a number of running backs this offseason.
The Bills will now move forward with rookie Devin Singletary, Frank Gore, and T.J. Yeldon as part of their backfield.
McCoy, 31, is a former second-round pick of the Eagles back in 2009. After six years in Philadelphia, McCoy was traded to the Bills, who later signed him to a five-year, $40 million contract that included $20 million guaranteed.
McCoy was set to make base salaries of $6 million and $6.075 million over the next two years of the agreement.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing McCoy will free up $6,425,000 of available cap space while creating $2,625,000 in dead money.
In 2018, McCoy has appeared in 12 games for the Bills and rushed for 479 yards on 145 carries (3.3 YPC) to go along with 29 receptions for 210 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
