Stephen Watson reports that the Broncos are close to finalizing a contract with former Chargers RB Melvin Gordon.
- Jason La Canfora confirms that the Broncos are, in fact, signing Gordon to a contract.
- According to Ian Rapoport, Gordon receives a two-year, $16 million contract with $13.5 million guaranteed. Rapoport says there was a better offer out there for him, but he liked the opportunity to play his former team twice a year.
The Broncos were reportedly looking to add a running back to compliment Phillip Lindsay and Gordon was the best available player at the position.
Gordon had been linked to the Bills, Dolphins and Buccaneers this offseason.
Gordon, 26, is a former first-round pick out of Wisconsin by the Chargers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year $10.669 million rookie contract that was fully guaranteed and made a base salary of $1,889,967 for the 2018 season.
The Chargers picked up Gordon’s fifth-year option this past May worth $5,605,000 for the 2019 season. He is testing the open market as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NFL career.
In 2019, Gordon appeared in 12 games for the Chargers and rushed for 612 yards on 162 carries (3.8 YPC) to go along with 42 receptions for 296 yards receiving and nine total touchdowns.
We had him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
