Browns Trading DT Danny Shelton To Patriots

Field Yates reports that the Browns are trading DT Danny Shelton to the Patriots for a conditional pick.

  • According to Yates, the Patriots acquire Shelton and a 2018 fifth-round pick from the Browns for 2019 third-round pick.
  • Ian Rapoport mentions that the Browns made Shelton available for trade last year ahead of the deadline and spoke with a few teams including the Broncos.

This is the fourth trade the Browns have made in the past 24 hours, as new GM John Dorsey works to reshape the team’s roster before heading into free agency next week.

Shelton, 24, is a former first-round pick of the Browns back in 2015. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $11.703 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $2,030,955 for the 2018 season.

The Patriots will have to decide whether to pick up his fifth-year option in the coming months.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Shelton will free up $2,030,955 of available cap space while creating $1,692,940 in dead money.

In 2017, Shelton appeared in 14 games for the Browns and recorded 33 tackles, no sacks and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 35 interior defensive lineman out of 122 qualifying players.
