Dolphins Name Tua Tagovailoa New Starting QB

According to Adam Schefter, the Dolphins are naming first-round QB Tua Tagovailoa their starting quarterback going forward.

This comes as somewhat of a surprise, as veteran QB Ryan Fitzpatrick had been playing well and had the Dolphins on a winning streak the past few weeks.

Tagovailoa made his NFL debut late in a 24-0 win against the Jets this past weekend.

Dolphins HC Brian Flores had previously said he was reticent to put Tagovailoa in so soon after his dislocated hip injury last fall. However, Tagovailoa has passed every single medical checkpoint.

At 3-3, the Dolphins are in the thick of the wildcard race in the AFC and now it will be the rookie Tagovailoa leading them when they return from their bye this week against the Rams in Week 8.

Tagovailoa, 22, was a two-year starter at Alabama and earned All-American honors in 2018. The Dolphins used the No. 5 overall pick in this year’s draft on him.

Tagovailoa is projected to sign a four-year, $30,275,438 rookie contract that includes a $19,578,501 signing bonus. The contract includes a fifth-year for the Dolphins to pick up for the 2024 season.

In 2020, Tagovailoa has appeared in one game for the Dolphins and completed both of his passing attempts for nine yards.
