Dolphins Trading ILB Kiko Alonso To Saints For OLB Vince Biegel

Herbie Teope is reporting that the Dolphins are trading ILB Kiko Alonso to the Saints on Sunday.

  • According to Nick Underhill, the Saints are trading OLB Vince Biegel to the Dolphins for Alonso.
  • Mike Triplett mentions that the Saints are not expected to be on the hook for the $6.5 million that Alonso was scheduled to earn in base salary this year.

Reports from recent days mentioned that the Dolphins were planning to release Alonso if they were unable to complete a trade and it appears as though the Saints stepped up to get a deal done.

Alonso previously requested a trade out of Miami, as his role was expected to be dramatically reduced this year under the new coaching staff.

Alonso, 29, is a former second-round pick of the Bills back in 2013. The Bills traded to the Eagles in return for RB LeSean McCoy back in 2015.

From there, Alonso was traded to the Dolphins along with Byron Maxwell back in 2016 in return for a first-round pick.

Alonso is in the third year of his four-year, $28.91 million contract and stands to make base salaries of $6.485 million and $6.375 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2018, Alonso appeared in 15 games for the Dolphins and recorded 125 tackles, three interceptions, three forced fumbles, a recovery and six pass defenses.

Biegel, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Packers back in 2017. He spent just over a year in Green Bay before he was waived coming out of the preseason last year.

The Saints later signed Biegel to their practice squad before eventually promoting him to their active roster. New Orleans brought him back on an exclusive rights contract this past February.

In 2018, Biegel appeared in 14 games for the Saints and recorded four tackles and no sacks.
