John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Houston Texans have granted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers permission to speak with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
So far the Buccaneers have interviewed Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman and Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray but Phillips is a much bigger name that could help them generate more interest in the team despite a dismal 2011 season. Phillips turned one of the worst defenses in NFL history into of the leagues best in just one season and for that he deserves some interest. Still Phillips has failed as a head coach in years past but the Buccaneers need someone who can bring someย continuityย to the leagues youngest roster.
It will be interesting to see if Phillips is interested in the job as he may elect to stay in Houston and coach a great group of players.
