Buccaneers Reportedly Set To Sign Former Browns QB Alex Tanney

Adam Caplan of ESPN reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are set to sign former Browns QB Alex Tanney.

  • Caplan adds that Tanney “may get a chance to compete” for the No. 3 quarterback position.

Tanney, 26, had two years remaining on his three-year, $1.485 million contract with Cleveland before he was released. ย After the Browns drafted Johnny Manziel and added Connor Shaw as an undrafted free agent, it was clear that the team wanted to go in a different direction.

Head Coach Lovie Smith has made it clear that QB Josh McCown was signed to be the starter for Tampa Bay. ย Mixed reports have emerged regarding second-year QB Mike Glennon‘s future with the team, though it would appear his job is safe considering his relative success as a mid-round rookie and inexpensive contract.

Tanney will likely compete with QB Mike Kafka, and undrafted free agent QB Brett Smith out of Wyoming. ย Kafka has only thrown 16 passes in his three-year career in Philadelphia, and Smith is considered a long shot to make the team.

Tanney has spent time with the Chiefs, Cowboys and Browns, though he is yet to take an NFL snap in a regular season game.
