According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, several contending teams were willing to offer “substantially more than a first-round pick” for Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson had they been open to trading him.
La Canfora says it’s not out of the question the Cardinals would have been able to secure multiple first-round picks for Peterson, who was viewed as the “crown jewel” of the trade deadline.
Sources have told La Canfora that several teams were prepared to trade first- and second-round picks for Peterson and it’s possible a bidding way could have broken out after the Cowboys gave up a first-round pick for WR Amari Cooper.
However, Peterson released a statement last week saying that he’s committed to helping the Cardinals beyond this season.
While that may be the case, La Canfora believes teams could still attempt to pursue a deal for Peterson at the combine next year.
Last week,ย Adam Schefterย reported thatย Peterson has requested that the team trade him before the upcoming deadline. According to Schefter, Peterson feels as if the situation in Arizona has deteriorated and he has reaffirmed to others that he “desperately” wants out.
It’s worth mentioning that the Cardinals have publicly said that they’re not interested in trading Peterson, even though he reportedly requested a trade out of Arizona.
Peterson, 28, is a former first-round pick of the Cardinals back in 2011. He’s currently in the fifth year of his seven-year, $83.02 million that included $48 million guaranteed and set to make base salaries of $11 million over the next two years of the agreement.
In 2018, Peterson has appeared in six games for the Cardinals and recorded 29 tackles, one sack, an interception, a fumble recovery and two pass defenses.
