Latest On Chargers & Philip Rivers

Update:

Jay Glazer clarified Tuesday that he was not reporting that the Chargers have “moved on” from QB Philip Rivers during an appearance on “The Herd” show yesterday.

Instead, Glazer says he just offered his opinion that he doesn’t expect Rivers to be back in Los Angeles for the 2020 season.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chargers have not made a decision regarding veteran QB Philip Rivers and his future with the team. However, Rapoport says Rivers’ future with the team is “up in the air.”

According to Rapoport, the Chargers are still working through their options right now including finding a new quarterback, franchising Rivers and or allow him to walk in free agency to see what’s out there for him in the market.

Rapoport adds that “all options are on the table” right now for the Chargers.

Jay Glazer said Monday during an appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” that the Chargers have decided to move on from QB Philip Rivers and will allow him to leave in free agency this offseason.

“The Chargers moved on from Philip Rivers,” Glazer said, per Alan Bell

As the Chargers struggled to a 5-11 record in 2019, Rivers struggled along with the team. He threw the second-most interceptions in the NFL in 2019 with 20 and the possibility of benching him for Tyrod Taylor was even discussed.

Rivers has said he wants to play in 2020 even if it’s with a new team. The Chargers have been doing work on quarterback prospects for a few straight years now and are in a position to use the No. 6 pick in the draft on their quarterback of the future.

There has also been some speculation that Patriots QB Tom Brady would be interested in playing for the Chargers if he leaves New England in free agency.

As for Rivers’ future, there’s been some speculation he could end up with the Buccaneers. Rivers permanently moved his family from San Diego to Florida this year.

Rivers, 38, is a former first-round pick of the Giants back in 2004. He was later traded to the Chargers in return for Eli Manning.

Rivers just finished the final year of his five-year, $99 million contract that includes $65 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2019 season. He will be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NFL career.

In 2019, Rivers appeared in all 16 games for the Chargers and completed 66 percent of his passes for 4,615 yards, 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
