Chargers GM Tom Telesco told reporters on Monday that they plan to exercise RB Melvin Gordon‘s fifth-year option, per Jack Wang.
The fifth-year option will run the Chargers $5,605,000 for the 2019 season. It’s worth mentioning that the fifth-year option is only guaranteed for injury and won’t prevent the two parties from working on a long-term extension in the next year or so.
Gordon, 25, is a former first-round pick out of Wisconsin by the Chargers in the 2015 NFL Draft. He is entering the final year of his four-year $10.669 million rookie contract that is fully guaranteed and is set to earn a base salary of $1,889,967 for the 2018 season.
In 2017, Gordon appeared in all 16 games and recorded 284 carries for 1,105 rushing yards (3.9 YPC) and scored eight touchdowns, to go along with 58 receptions for 476 yards receiving (8.2 YPC) and four touchdowns. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 12 running back out of 58 qualifying players.
