Chiefs Receive 2018 4th-Rd & 2019 2nd-Rd Picks From Rams For CB Marcus Peters

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Chiefs trade CB Marcus Peters to the Rams for a 2018 fourth-round pick and a 2019 2nd-round pick.

  • Adam Schefter adds that the Chiefs also traded a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Rams as part of this deal.
  • According to Albert Breer, the Chiefs were initially looking for a similar trade package as one they got from the Redskins for QB Alex Smith, which included a third-round pick and a player, but they settled on this deal in the end.

We’ve been waiting for the trade details to surface after reports from early last week said that the Chiefs and Rams have an agreement in place for Peters.

It’s worth mentioning that this trade can’t officially be processed until March 14, which is the start of the 2018 league year.

Rumors first surfaced that the Chiefs could trade Peters a few weeks ago and sure enough, the Chiefs were able to get a deal in place soon after. The Chiefs reportedly worked on a deal for three weeks and spoke to a few teams including the 49ers and Browns.

Peters was one of their best defensive players the past few years and I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of criticism coming the Chiefs’ way for getting such a low return for a Pro Bowl player. However, reports said that Kansas City wasn’t going to sign him to a long-term extension due to the concerns they have about him.

Peters now joins a very talented Rams’ defense under Wade Phillips.

Peters, 25, is a former first-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2015. He is entering the final year of his four-year, $9.584 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $1,741,932 for the 2018 season.

The Rams will have to decide whether to pick up Peters’ fifth-year option in the coming months.

In 2017, Peters appeared in 14 games for the Chiefs and recorded 46 tackles, five interceptions, four forced fumbles, two recoveries with one being returned for a touchdown and nine pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 17 cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.
