Adam Schefter, citing sources close to Chip Kelly, reports that the 49ers head coach has no plans to return to coaching a college football team, even if the Oregon job ends up being available.
According to Schefter, Kelly plans to stay in San Francisco through the “thick and thins.”
Kelly has been contacted by college programs, but Schefter says that they have been told in no uncertain terms that Kelly is not interested in going back to the college game.
Many have wondered if a return to Oregon could be a possibility for Kelly, given how much the team has struggled. Beyond that, Oregon booster Phil Knight attended last Sunday’s 49ers game as Kelly’s guest.
Kelly later said of the possibility of leaving the 49ers: “No. I’m the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. So, not looking at anything else. I’m here.”
Since taking the Eagles’ head-coaching job back in 2013, Kelly has produced a record of 27-27 (50 percent) as an NFL head coach including one playoff appearance while he was with the Eagles.
We’ll have more regarding Kelly and a potential return to college as the news is available.
