Calvin Watkinsย ofย ESPN Dallas reports that Tony Romo made the decision to table talks regarding a contractย extension so that heย “concentrate on the season.”
Watkins adds that Dallas still wants to re-sign him long-term.ย This coincides withย Stephen Jones’ remarks that he hopes Romo finishes out his career as Cowboy.
Another loss, in what was a winnable game, probably isn’t going to help their fans come around on the idea of Romo playing quarterback for them in the years to come. Romo will be 33 at the start of next season, so it’s not as though still has his prime years ahead of him. Guys like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees have all played very well from 33 on, but it’s clear that Romo hasn’t taken the step towards being aย perennialย MVP candidate, so it would at least be wise for them to construct a contractย extensionย to include an out after a few seasons or front-load the deal that would prevent them from being hamstrung by his contract should his productionย drop off.
This figures to be a topic that we will be covering during the offseason.
