According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys plan to start training camp with DE Demarcus Lawrence and CB Byron Jones on the PUP list.
Lawrence and Jones are both coming off offseason surgeries. Lawrence had his shoulder operated on and is targeting Week 1 to return to action. Jones is recovering from a hip injury.
Neither player is expected to practice while the team is away at camp in Oxnard, California, through August 15.
The Cowboys signed Lawrence to a major extension this offseason. Jones is on a list of a number of other Cowboys in line to receive an extension in the near future.
Lawrence, 26, is a former second-round pick by the Cowboys in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Boise State. He finished a four-year rookie contract before the Cowboys used their franchise tag last year.
Dallas once again franchised Lawrence at the start of 2019 before agreeing on a five-year, $105 million deal.
In 2018, Lawrence appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and recorded 64 tackles, 10.5 sacks, an interception, two forced fumbles, a recovery and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 9 overall edge defender out of 103 qualifying players.
Jones, 26, is a former first-round pick out of Connecticut by the Cowboys in the 2015 NFL Draft. He played out the final year of his four-year, $8.601 million rookie contract, but the Cowboys elected to pick up his fifth-year option last year.
Jones now stands to make a base salary of $6.17 million for the 2019 season. Tthe fifth-year option is only guaranteed for injury and won’t prevent the two parties from working on a long-term extension in the next year.
In 2018, Jones appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and recorded 67 tackles, no interceptions and 14 pass defenses.
