The Dallas Cowboys have officially placed the franchise tag on QB Dak Prescott on Monday, according to David Moore.
Adam Schefter notes Dallas has placed the exclusive tag on PRescott, meaning no other team can sign him.
All indications have been that the Cowboys were likely going to have to franchise Prescott in order to ensure he’s back with the team in 2020.
Jane Slater reports the Cowboys felt good about their offer late last week which was described as “above the Goff deal.” However, after Prescott’s agent countered, negotiations were quiet as of late last night.
Dallas has said they still plan to get a long-term extension in place with Prescott, but it appears as though they still need more time to work on a new deal. A recent report mentioned that the Cowboys were offering Prescott $33 million per year.
The franchise tag will cost the Cowboys $26.824 million fully guaranteed for the 2020 season.
Prescott, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and was in line to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
In 2019, Prescott appeared in all 16 games and completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He has also rushed for 277 yards and three touchdowns for Dallas. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 10 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
We had him included in our Top 100 – 2020 Free Agents list.
