Cowboys Have Made ‘More Progress’ On Extension For Dak Prescott Than Amari Cooper

Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram reports that the Cowboys have made “more progress” in contract negotiations with QB Dak Prescott than WR Amari Cooper.

According to Hill, Cooperโ€™s demands are “shockingly high” despite the fact that the Cowboys are aware that the floor for a new deal is likely $16 million per year.

Hill says that the Cowboys appear to be “nonplussed” about making the Prescott the highest paid player in team history worth around $30 million or more per seasons.

On Monday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told Rich Eisen that he’s “confident we will get this (deal) done“, referring to Prescott.

We are sold on Dak,โ€ Jones said. โ€œWe do want to have him for the long term. We think he is worthy of investing in for the long term. He is going into his fourth year in the NFL. When you look at the snaps he has had, the situations he has been in and how he has got here and you see he has performed, we see real upside in Dak. You donโ€™t have it all yet. We love the way he logically progresses through a game. You see when the going gets tough when heโ€™s got to come from behind when he turns it loose a little bit. You see him make those plays. He emboldens me to make a deal with him that puts him here for the long term.โ€

Prescott, 25, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and set to make a base salary of $720,000 for the 2019 season.

In 2018, Prescott has appeared in all 16 games for the Cowboys and completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 3,885 yards to go along with 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He has also rushed for 305 yards and six touchdowns.

Cooper, 24, is a former No. 4 overall pick by the Raiders out of Alabama in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Raiders traded him to the Cowboys for a first-round pick midway through the 2018 season.

He is in the final year of his four-year, $22.7 million fully guaranteed rookie contract and is set to earn a base salary of $705,000 for 2018 to go along with a $2,825,426 roster bonus.

In 2018, Cooper appeared in 15 games, six for the Raiders and nine for the Cowboys. In total, he caught 75 passes for 1005 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.
