Deshaun Watson Eyeing Shorter Deal Than Patrick Mahomes

According to Ian Rapoport, the Texans and QB Deshaun Watson are working hard on an extension that has a framework different than what the Chiefs gave QB Patrick Mahomes.

Rapoport says the deal is closer to what has been signed in recent years by Seahawks QB Russell Wilson and Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. Wilson paced the quarterback market last year when he signed a four-year extension that averaged $35 million a season.

Mahomes, however, just signed a 10-year extension worth a maximum of $500 million for a $50 million average annual salary.

Pro Football Talk reports Watson is eyeing a three-year extension to his current deal which has two years remaining. While he likely won’t make the same average as Mahomes, he’ll also get to return to the bargaining table sooner.

Houston’s goal is to ink Watson to a deal before next Thursday’s season opener against the Chiefs.

Watson, 24, was taken in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft by the Texans. He signed a four-year, $13.854 million with the Texans and will make a base salary of $1.17 million for the 2020 season.

Houston picked up Watson’s fifth-year option a few weeks ago worth around $17.3 million for the 2021 season.

In 2019, Watson appeared in 15 games for the Texans and completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 3,852 yards with 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 413 yards and seven touchdowns.

We’ll have more on Watson as the news is available.
