Barry Jackson of the Miami Heraldย writes that the Miami Dolphins have told people that they like Colts DEย Robert Mathisย who’ll be an unrestricted free agent in theย comingย weeks.
Jackson adds that the Dolphins expect him to be a “pricey” option on the free agent market.
Miami is reportedly making a transition from a 3-4 defensive front to a 4-3 this season and plan to move OLBย Cameron Wakeย to defensive end. Adding an additional pass rushing opposite of Wake would make sense if they’re unable to retainย Kendall Langford. Still, Miami has options with their defensive line. Jackson mentions that they could moveย Jared Odrickย andย Randy Starksย inside and allowย Paul Soliaiย to leave during free agency.
Ultimately, whatever Miami elects to do regarding their defensive line will be determined by the amount of money that they spend on the quarterback position. The Dolphins figure to have somewhere between, $12 to $16 million in available cap space this year.
We have Mathis listed as the #17 best available free agent in ourย Top 50 Free Agentsย list.
