Dolphins Interested In Colts DE Robert Mathis?

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes that the Miami Dolphins have told people that they like Colts DE Robert Mathis who’ll be an unrestricted free agent in the coming weeks.

Jackson adds that the Dolphins expect him to be a “pricey” option on the free agent market.

Miami is reportedly making a transition from a 3-4 defensive front to a 4-3 this season and plan to move OLB Cameron Wake to defensive end. Adding an additional pass rushing opposite of Wake would make sense if they’re unable to retain Kendall Langford. Still, Miami has options with their defensive line. Jackson mentions that they could move Jared Odrick and Randy Starks inside and allow Paul Soliai to leave during free agency.

Ultimately, whatever Miami elects to do regarding their defensive line will be determined by the amount of money that they spend on the quarterback position. The Dolphins figure to have somewhere between, $12 to $16 million in available cap space this year.

We have Mathis listed as the #17 best available free agent in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
