Joe Schad is reporting that the Dolphins are likely to use their franchise tag on WRย Jarvis Landry in the coming weeks.
- According to Albert Breer,ย the Dolphins have officially filed the paperwork to use theย non-exclusive tag on Landry, which means it will cost them approximately $16 million for the 2018 season fully guaranteed.
Landry is an interesting case, given that he has primarily played slot receiver, which is not as highly valued as outside receivers are. Although, the Dolphins would run the risk of losing him to another team in a free agent market that doesn’t have a lot of impact options outside of Landry.
Franchising Landry could complicate negotiations between the two parties in the coming months, but it would at least buy them another year to sort things out on offense before they’re forced to offer him a long-term extension or let him walk.
Landry, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2014. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $3.5 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $893,852 for the 2017 season.
In 2017, Landry has appeared in 16ย games and caught 112 passes for 987 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. He has also contributed 81 kick return yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 19 receiver out of 119 qualifying players.
We had him featured in our Top 100 โ 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
