Dolphins Plan To Cut TE Julius Thomas & LB Lawrence Timmons Before Free Agency

Armando Salguero of Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins will release TE Julius Thomas and LB Lawrence Timmons by March 14.

Beyond that, Salguero says it’s also possible Miami will terminate the fifth-year option on RT Ja’Wuan James, which would bring the total cap savings from these three moves to $21 million.

This shouldn’t come as a big surprise, considering that Thomas and Timmons have both come up as potential cap casualties for a few months now.

Thomas, 29, is a former fourth-round pick by the Broncos in the 2011 NFL Draft. He is in the third year of his five-year, $46 million contract that included $24 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $6.5 million for the 2018 season.

The Jaguars elected to trade Thomas to the Dolphins in return for a 2017 seventh-round pick.

In 2017, Thomas appeared in 14 games for the Dolphins and caught 41 passes for 388 yards receiving and three touchdowns. ProFootballFocus has him rated as the No. 50 overall tight end out of 71 qualifying players.

Timmons, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Steelers back in 2007. He’s spent all 10 seasons of his career in Pittsburgh and played out the final year of his six-year, $50 million contract before agreeing to a two-year, $12 million deal with the Dolphins last offseason.

The Dolphins suspended Timmons indefinitely after he surprising went missing before their Week 2 game against the Chargers. He later returned to the team and finished out the year in Miami.

In 2017, Timmons appeared in all 14 games for the Steelers and recorded 84 tackles, no sacks, and three pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 67 inside linebacker out of 87 qualifying players.
