A league source tells Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that the Dolphins would prefer to trade S Reshad Jones if they get the kind of offer they would prefer.
Jones has skipped the team’s voluntary offseason program, but is expected to report in time for mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.
Jackson says he reached out to Jones’ agent, Joel Segal, but he declined to say whether his client would prefer to be traded.
A source tells Jackson that Miami hasn’t made an issue out of Jones skipping OTAs because they don’t want it to affect his trade value.
In the event that no trade surfaces for Jones, Jackson says that he could still remain in Miami for the 2019 season. However, he is not expected to be part of the Dolphins’ long-term future.
Jackson points out that releasing Jones outright makes little sense for the Dolphins, considering that they would take on $17.1 million of dead money and net just $100,000 of cap space. According to Jackson, the Dolphins could be willing to pay part of Jackson’s salary to facilitate a trade much like they did with Ryan Tannehill and Robert Quinn earlier in the offseason.
As for why the Dolphins are interested in trading Jones, Jackson mentions that he’s 31 years old and his outsized salary isn’t a fit for the team’s long-term plans.
Beyond that, Jackson writes that people that the new regime was very unhappy last season about Jones refusing to go back in the Jets game.
Jones, 31, is a former fifth-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2010. He’s was in the final year of his five-year, $30.81 million contract when the Dolphins signed him to a five-year, $60 million extension that includes $35 million guaranteed in 2017.
Jones stands to make a base salary of $13.01 million for the 2019 season.
According to OverTheCap.com, trading Jones would free up $5,025,000 of available cap space while creating $12,135,000 in dead money.
In 2018, Jones appeared in 14 games for the Dolphins and recorded 72 tackles, three interceptions, one defensive touchdown and nine pass defenses.
We’ll have more regarding Jones and the Dolphins as the news is available.
