According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins will move on from Ryan Tannehill as their starting quarterback this offseason.
Miami would like to see if they can trade Tannehill, but Salguero admits “the chances of that happening are not great.”
Salguero adds that the Dolphins won’t trade for or sign QB Nick Foles this offseason and they aren’t planning to bring in Teddy Bridgewater.
Instead, Salguero writes that Miami will not be targeting top-tier free agents as they’ve done in the past, nor will they consider aging players with a greater chance of injury.
The Dolphins are clearly prepared to enter a rebuilding year and possibly position themselves for a top quarterback prospect in 2020 such as Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa. Salguero notes that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross “loves” the idea of landing Tagovailoa next year.
Reports have said the Dolphins are prepared to move on from Tannehill, so this is just further confirmation.
Tannehill, 30, is a former first-round pick of the Dolphins back in 2012. He’s currently in the third year of his six-year, $95.272 million contract that includes $45 million guaranteed and stands to make base salaries of $17.47 million and $18.725 million over the next two years of the agreement.
According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Tannehill would free up $13,188,332 of available cap space while creating $13,423,334 in dead money. However, if Miami were to designate Tannehill has a post-June 1 release, they could improve those figures to $18.75 million of cap room and $7,861,666 of dead money.
In 2018, Tannehill has appeared in 10 games for the Dolphins and thrown for 1,832 yards while completing 65 percent of his passes to go along with 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
We’ll have more regarding Tannehill and the Dolphins as the news is available.
