Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that free agent S Eric Berry did have opportunities to play for teams last year, but he wanted to take a sabbatical and ensure that he’s right both mentally and physically before returning to the NFL.
Garafolo says that Berry intends to play in 2020, despite sitting out the entire 2019 season.
Rumors and reports linked Berry to the Browns and Cowboys last year, but nothing ever came of the talk.
Berry, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Chiefs back in 2010. He worked his way back from Hodgkin’s lymphoma and managed to produce an impressive 2015 season.
Berry played out his rookie contract with the Chiefs before being franchised in 2017. The two parties ultimately agreed to a new six-year, $78 million contract that includes $29.8 million guaranteed.
Berry was set to make base salaries of $12.4 million and $9.4 million over the next two years when the Chiefs released him with a post-June 1 designation last summer.
In 2018, Berry appeared in two games and recorded 11 tackles and no interceptions for the Chiefs.
